“I’ve spent hours searching for the right theme for my projects only to be disappointed with poor design and overcrowded features. With Divi and Josefin, my search is now over!”

PATCH OFFENDERS AND VOLUNTEERS CELEBRATE

PATCH OFFENDERS AND VOLUNTEERS CELEBRATE

Social Reintegration is a term that most people have never heard, yet, in the world of criminal justice and reform, it is incredibly important. Some of the keys to success in Social Reintegration include, “…measures taken to encourage and promote contact with family, friends and the community, to which almost all prisoners will one day return.” The “how to” of this particular endeavor is complicated, but a certain step in this process is to facilitate contact between current offenders and compassionate community members in order for PATCH moms to feel more confident in forming positive relationships after leaving incarceration.

In an effort to help facilitate this kind of growth in its participants, in October of 2017—and for the very first time—PATCH invited (and cleared through correctional center protocols) volunteers to its PATCH Offender Organization Banquet. Over the course of the two-hour event, the 60 attendees participated in a program, enjoyed a catered meal, and made connections, which in some cases, were years in the making. And while the occasion was an obvious highlight for the PATCH offender participants, the most glowing reviews were received by some of the volunteer drivers, who finally had the opportunity to meet the mother of PATCH children whom they had known and served for years. As one volunteer put it…

“This event was the highlight of my year.”

PATCH LINKED TO LOWER RECIDIVISM

PATCH LINKED TO LOWER RECIDIVISM

“Parenting Programs Like PATCH are Useful” suggests MO Department of Corrections report

A recent report from the Missouri Department of Corrections shows that PATCH participants have been less likely to return to prison than other females with dependents. The report, which spans from 2010 through 2017, found that PATCH graduates returned to prison almost 10 percent less frequently than other inmates with dependents. But that is not the end of the good news, as David Oldfield, Director of Research and Evaluation for the Missouri Department of Corrections points out, “Most of the Patch offenders [who] returned to prison within two years of release have been returned for technical violations and you can see that because the incarceration rate is 25.3%, but the new conviction rate is only 8.9% (and that includes new probations).” Director Oldfield commented further that, “The recidivism rates for the females in your Patch program are lower than the average recidivism rates for all releases of females with dependents for all time periods from six months after release to three years.”

So what does all this mean?

It means that over the past eight years PATCH participants have been less likely to return to prison for any reason (and less likely to commit new crimes) than their non-participating counterparts. Greater numbers of PATCH participants will certainly bring added clarity, but according to the numbers thus far, PATCH’s impact has been demonstrably positive and this recent report is certainly–as Director Oldfield described–“…promising news for the PATCH program…”.

GREAT IDEA TO HELP PATCH KIDS GO BACK TO SCHOOL

GREAT IDEA TO HELP PATCH KIDS GO BACK TO SCHOOL

For the second time in three years, members of the Kearney United Methodist Church and other Kearney friends provided help with school supplies for PATCH kids living in the Kansas City area. Lou Marchbank, PATCH volunteer driver, spearheaded the effort that included a new backpack, a few basic school supplies and a gift card per child given to the caregiver to help with the purchase of the rest of what was on the school supply list. Lou explains, “PATCH is doing great things to keep incarcerated moms and their kids connected, but the unsung heroes in this are the aunts and uncles, grandparents and single dads who are struggling to raise these innocent children. These sweet kids have so little and really appreciate getting a new backpack and supplies to start the new school year.”

Aiden, age 12, is pictured with his new backpack, provided by members of the Kearney United Methodist Church.

Special Delivery! Each child was able to select a backpack from this wide assortment.

How Did They Do It?

Lou and friends made a list of basic school supplies determined by the child’s grade level, listed this information on a card with the child’s name and provided the cards to church members. Cash donations were also accepted to help with the purchase of backpacks and $25 Walmart gift cards. They quickly realized they needed more.

The Rest of the Story

A search for more backpacks began. She answered an ad on one of the swap shops – a man was selling new Jansport backpacks for $15. She told him she was looking for some for a church project, and sent him the link to PATCH. She said they would be asking for help from the congregation, but if they didn’t have enough, they would be buying some of his.

After she got home from church the next day, she got this text from him:

“Hi Lou, I wanted to let you know that I was able to make back what I spent on these backpacks by selling some yesterday. I still have more, and I wanted to donate the rest to your church so you can minister to those kids. As I was sitting in church today, the Holy Spirit placed it upon my heart to contact you and donate my remaining inventory. If you are still in need, let me know and hopefully you can meet sometime soon. Talk soon Lou!”

They drove to his home in Parkville and picked them up that afternoon. The school supplies were delivered to the homes of many of the kids by Lou and her husband, Gary, PATCH volunteer drivers. Each child chose a backpack from the large assortment.
